THE HUMAN MICROBIOME
The Trillions of You
INTERACTIVE MAP
The human body contains 10 times more bacteria, fungi and other microorganisms than human cells. Most of these species are harmless—although they can still cause illness if they wind up in the wrong place. Researchers are beginning to learn exactly how some microbial species in the body help digestion and contribute to regulation of appetite and the immune system.

Also known as the human microbiota, the human microbiome is the complex system of microorganisms within the human body. We are homes to millions of unique, and diverse communities of microbes that carry out daily body functions. [3]
From living in the cities of our mouths, to the metropolis of our guts, microorganisms make up our immune system, aids in food digestion, and acts as a first line of defense against pathogens.
